On Saturday 12 October 2024, the 7th Day of the Catacombs – Autumn Edition will be held, which will involve some Roman catacombs that are not open to the public – S. Lorenzo, Tecla, Pretestato, Museo della Torretta in the Comprensorio Callistiano, the Fornai region in Domitilla and Generosa – and all other catacombs in Italy that can normally be visited.
The theme of this edition, as in the spring edition, “From remembrance to prayer”, is part of the preparatory path for the 2025 Jubilee. The Pope wanted this year to be dedicated to prayer, as a timely preparation for the celebration of the jubilee event.
The visit to the Christian catacombs, which allows visitors to have an experience that offers an encounter with the memories and testimonies of the first Christian communities, reminds us of people, events, and stories that are still very significant and important today. This evocative memory, directly perceived and experienced, cannot fail to arouse a deep reflection and therefore, for believers, prayer: a prayer addressed to the Lord, God of life and saviour, but also to the Martyrs and to those who have testified to their faith, whose example and intercession support us on the present path.
Among the symbols and images that speak of prayer, that of the Orans stands out above all: the figure that raises its arms to heaven to praise God, to thank him, to ask for aid and help, and to invoke liberation and salvation.
The image proposed is among the most famous: it is the figure of Orans, present in the “cubicle of the veiled lady”, located in the Catacombs of Priscilla.
During the visit, visitors will be invited to capture the many memories imprinted in the evocative environments of the catacombs and to stop for a moment in silence, in prayer.
During the day it will be possible, by booking in advance, to access and enjoy free guided tours of underground complexes in Rome and other Italian regions.
In addition, on the same day, events, special visits and workshops for children will also take place at some catacombs.
With this edition, the first cycle of the Days of the Catacombs comes to a close. During the Jubilee Year, numerous events and occasions are planned to make pilgrimages to the catacombs. The Pontifical Commission will offer a facilitated route, with a “pilgrim’s passport”, to those who wish to visit the Martyrs’ remains in the catacombs of Rome. This will be announced on the website www.catacombeditalia.va
Visits are always free, but booking is required.
